Johnn C. Youngblood, a quiet, unassuming person, was a giant in the field of physical education.  He grew up in northeastern Pennsylvania and served in the United States Navy during World War ll. 

 

After his discharge, he attended East Stroudsburg University, Pennsylvania, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree.  He earned a master’s degree from George Washington University, and then began a long and illustrious career as health and physical education teacher and coach in Arlington Public Schools.  John C. Youngblood was assistant principal and athletic director at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia for many years and later served as Arlington County Supervisor of Health, Physical Education and Athletics.  At various times he coached track, wrestling, and football.  In six years as head football coach at Washington-Lee, his teams won three Northern Virginia championships and one state title. 

 

Mr. Youngblood was one of the founders of local, state, and national organizations dedicated to improving high school athletic programs.  In retirement, Mr. Youngblood served as a member of the screening committee for the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, and he participated as a member of the selection committee of the American Teacher of the Year Awards sponsored by Walt Disney and McDonald’s.  Mr. Youngblood was the first president of the Virginia State High School Athletic Directors Association.  As a measure of respect and esteem among his peers, he was inducted into the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, and the National High School Sports Hall of Fame.  NVADACA is proud to award a scholarship in Mr. Youngblood’s name.
