richard's Story
R. C. Bosley was born on April 17, 1934 to Dick Claude and Ida Mae (Evans) Bosley in Gainesville, Texas. As R. C. described his childhood, he grew up in a loving, caring, nurturing, and strict home. His father, the eldest of seven children, was a truck driver, construction worker, and carpenter. His mother, one of eight siblings, was a home maker in the truest sense, canning fruits and vegetables from the garden in the summer and sewing and quilting during the winter. He was the first born in the family and was born at home. He had a younger sister, Geneva Ellen, and a younger brother, Burna Guy.
During the War, 1941-45, the family would house soldier's wives. In August 1957 he received his draft notice. After U.S. Army training at Ft. Carson, R. C. was selected to go to Ft. Myer, Virginia and was a member of The Olde Guard from 1957-59. Although trained as a "casket barrier," he shortly became the company clerk. The most memorable event during this time was meeting his future wife, Ruth, who worked at the Pentagon.
R. C. began his professional career in education in 1956 as a math teacher in Tulia, Texas. He arrived in Fairfax County in 1960 and began an illustrious career as a math teacher (Whittier Middle School), assistant principal (Luther Jackson 1965-1974), mathematics curriculum specialist (Area I, 1974-1979), elementary principal (Fort Hunt, 1979), middle school principal (Kilmer, 1979-84; Franklin, 1984-85; Lanier, 1986-88), area coordinator of instruction (Area Ill, 1985-86), and area administrator (Area Ill, 1988-89). Even after his retirement, R. C. served as interim principal at three high schools, two middle schools, and four elementary schools.
In R. C.'s professional achievements, he was co-director of a research project in using handheld calculators as well as co-director of a pilot project involving algebra and trigonometry. He was the author of "An Information Bulletin for Administrators" for Ohio University. He was awarded the Human Relations Award at Kilmer Intermediate and also at Area Ill. Additionally, he was also presented “Superboss of the Year” by the Fairfax Association of Educational Personnel and was awarded the Service Key Award by Phi Delta Kappa. R. C. belongs to a number of professional organizations including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, National Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Fairfax Middle School Principal's Association and Phi Delta Kappa (PDK). He served in a number of leadership positions in various organizations including president and vice president of PDK.
After retirement, R. C. continued his love of sports by participating in a number of events: bowling, softball, community tennis competitions, basketball, and racquetball. He continues to golf and swim. Sadly, Ruth passed away in 2014. R. C. has served as president for NVADACA twice and as its vice president. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for NVADACA.
